The soil assessment cone penetrometer, also known as the M.E.X.E. or Mexe penetrometer has been in use within civil engineering projects for decades. It was designed and used by the Military Engineering Experimental Establishment (hence Mexe) in the first part of the 20th century.

The fact that its design has barely changed in all these years and that it is still in use today by both military and industry is testament to its speed and relative accuracy when in use. It is a lightweight instrument (approx 2.5kg) which is quick to deploy and offers a good range of uses. It will indicate California Bearing Ratio (CBR) results with good repeatability and accuracy, allowing many results can be achieved quickly.

With accessories the soil assessment cone penetrometer can be adapted to measure road hardness for surface dressing design.
